Want to know one of the easiest ways to be more environmentally friendly this Christmas? Use less gift wrapping paper. Or if you’re up for a challenge, you can try not using any wrapping paper ;)

Fortunately, wrapping with less doesn't have to mean less beautiful or less fun. Here are our favorite eco-friendly ideas to keep the garbage at minimum and still be thoughtful and festive.

Here are some tips for gift wrapping alternatives this holiday:

  1. Use colorful pages from magazines to wrap small gifts
  2. Use old maps for wrapping  larger boxes
  3. Use an old calendar and mark the day
  4. If you end up buying wrapping paper look for a recycled paper
  5. Use old tins, boxes, baskets
  6. Use cloth ribbons instead of plastic bows
  7. Unwrap gifts carefully and save wrappings for reuse next year
  8. Grocery store paper bags
  9. Use brown Kraft paper which is recyclable and biodegradable
  10. Mason Jars
  11. Cloth
  12. Tote bags
  13. Use paper tape
  14. Use twine, leather cord, strips of scrap fabric, metal wire for tying everything
  15. Use a card written on recycled paper or cardboard

Think beyond paper. Its good for the environment but it's also a fun way to personalize your gifts and save money.

It’s kind of crazy to think we spend billions each year on something that is forgotten in minutes and needs to be cleaned up after it is tossed everywhere around your living room.

Zero Waste Christmas Ideas

Zero waste gift giving is one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season.

As much as I love gift giving, I prefer gifts that will be used rather than gifts that will be sitting in a box in someone’s closet for months or even years and contributing to the mountain of waste we already have.

But what is zero waste gift giving? And how can we achieve it when we barely have time to sometimes shop for ready made gifts?

I define zero waste gifts as handmade, homemade, secondhand, experiences, or reusing/regifting something that you already have and never used and is just sitting in a box in your closet but you know someone else will love it.

We can focus more on gifting items that are better for the environment and for the recipient rather than feeling we should spend money on gifts that may never be used again just because we have to.

Some zero gifts ideas are:

  1. Stainless steel straws
  2. Money
  3. Gift card
  4. Audible membership
  5. Netflix membership
  6. Homemade jams
  7. Homemade lotions
  8. Plants
  9. Homemade cookies
  10. Reusable wraps
  11. Gym membership
  12. Package free soap
  13. Dancing lessons
  14. Cooking lessons
  15. Personalized coupons
  16. Movie tickets
  17. Homemade pet toys
  18. Handmade wooden toys
  19. Handmade socks, scarves, mittens, hats
  20. Reusable sandwich bags
  21. Bus or a train credit
  22. Dinner to a favorite restaurant
  23. TIME TOGETHER
